Steve received a BSc (Hons) in Geology from Plymouth University in 1982 and then went on to study at James Cook University, North Queensland, Australia. In 1990 he received his Ph.D degree titled “The Middle Proterozoic Maronan Supergroup, Soldiers Cap Belt, eastern Mount Isa Inlier; a rationalisation of the geology and mineralisation of a complexly deformed and metamorphosed terrane”.
He has accumulated over 25 years of experience in exploration for base and precious metals working with considerable success all over the world. These activities have culminated in significant discoveries on four continents in a range of different commodities.
Since 2002 this work has focused on developing an advanced understanding of the mineral potential of India and the former Soviet Union and developing exploration strategies and philosophies to permit the fast track discovery of the next generation of world class mineral deposits. This is part of a 10 year discovery strategy which has already identified potential world class deposits in gold, PGE’s and copper.
Steve is now overseeing evaluation of two world class gold deposits and continuing to expand exploration and discovery activities in a number of countries around the world.
From 1990 to 1996, Steve was Senior and then Principal Geologist with CRAE/Rio Tinto Plc at Dugald River (Zn-Pb) and Mount Roseby (Cu) in the Mt Isa Block. Dr Newbery was part of the FS team at Dugald and led the team to the discovery of the Mount Roseby Cu deposits. Both are currently under development.
Steve then joined Pasminco Plc as Regional Exploration Manager Curnamona and led the team responsible for discovering a major new gold-copper system on the Benagerie Ridge. The Portia/North Portia gold deposit is currently under development.
In 1999 he joined the Board of Lake Resources N.L. Australia as Executive Director Exploration, operating predominately in Sweden and India, establishing joint ventures with Zinkgruvan Mining AB, a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto Plc, and with BHP Billiton Plc. Lake Resources were successfully listed on the ASX in 2001. Dr Newbery left Lake Resources later that year to start his own company.
In 2002 Dr. Newbery recognised the economic potential of the PGM mineralization at the Boula platinum deposit and founded PMCI as Managing Director, The Company was successfully listed on AIM in April 2005 and subsequently taken over by SUN Group in 2006.
IN 2005 Dr Newbery oversaw discovery, assessment and acquisition activities within SUN Mining as SVP Exploration and as Technical Director for SUN Gold. This has involved the review and successful acquisition of the large Kluchevskoye and Yubileinoye gold mines (2Moz at acquisition and now over 15moz Au JORC Compliant), investments in a number of subsidiary ventures and the review of numerous investment opportunities in a range of commodities around the world.
Steve is now Chairman of the Mutus Liber International group of companies with particular emphasis on MLI Mining and its small scale mining activities in Tanzania. MLI is a Dubai registered company headquartered in Dubai with additional offices in Dar es Salaam and Moscow. MLI is a privately owned company currently held by employees, management and directors actively building an investment portfolio.
Steve is also providing geological advice to the Board's of several aspiring mining companies to aid in the development of new mining projects and new IPO's.
